Vienna, June 9,1979. , then went to Milan for vocal studies with Sammarco and Stracciari. He made his operatic debut as Count Luna in Budapest in 1930; was a member of the Vienna State Opera (1936-39); also sang at Covent Garden in London and the Salzburg Festival. On Dec. Y. as Renato in Un ballo in maschera; he remained on its roster until 1948, and then returned for the 1949-50 season. He subsequently sang in Rome, in Paris, and at the Bayreuth Festival; also made appearances with the Budapest Opera, and later toured as a concert singer.
He also was president of the Swiss Copyright Soc. (1958-80) and a teacher of composition at the Hannover Hochschule fur Musik (1963-75). In 1965 he won the opera prize of the SUTHERLAND City of Salzburg, in 1967 the prize of the Swiss Composers Union, and in 1991 the Prix de la Fondation Pierre et Louisa Meylan in Lausanne. In 1977 he was made a member of the Bavarian Akademie der Schonen Kunste in Munich. In his music, Sutermeister placed prime importance upon the composer's responsibility to communicate directly with his listeners.
