Other efforts to mobilise general deterrence effects of the criminal justice system have met with more disappointing outcomes. ‘Scared Straight’ projects have taken youngsters on the fringes of criminal behaviour to prisons, where they are confronted with the reality of the experiences they risk if they follow criminal careers. Typically they meet offenders who highlight the unpleasantness of the consequences of their own past criminal behaviour. It is assumed that this will lead those exposed to rethink their way of life and instead to go straight.

Restorative justice has been advocated instead not only as a means of avoiding some of the unintended criminogenic consequences of the traditional system, but also as a means of providing more effective closure for victims (Johnstone and Van Ness 2007). We concentrate here mainly on crime prevention, the focus of this book. The main crime reduction thinking behind restorative justice is that it provides a means whereby many unintended crime causation mechanisms are replaced with ones that will reduce the probability of future crime.
