Myers Hans H. Wellisch Ian Wallace Ralph Lee Woodward, Jr. John J. Horton is Deputy Librarian of the University of Bradford and was formerly Chairman of its Academic Board of Studies in Social Sciences. He has maintained a longstanding interest in the discipline of area studies and its associated bibliographical problems, with special reference to European Studies. In particular he has published in the field of Icelandic and of Yugoslav studies, including the two relevant volumes in the World Bibliographical Series.

It is a region which has experienced a constant flow of immigrants from neighbouring islands, mainly for seasonal agricultural work. In addition, Chinese indentured labourers were brought to Cuba to replace the slaves freed in 1886. There has also been a sprinkling of other European as well as Arab settlers and small-scale Japanese settlements earlier in this century. Immigration continued well into the 20th century, with thousands of Spanish immigrants arriving annually even as late as 1934. The Jewish population, never large, shrank rapidly after the 1959 revolution.

It also involved creating a more open and supportive environment for foreign investment, an aim which received institutional backing with the passing of a more liberal foreign investment law in September 1995 and the drafting of laws to reform banking and other key economic sectors. The year 1995 also saw mounting international opposition to US attempts to extend its trade embargo. This took place side-by-side with considerable diplomatic activity by President Castro and other government officials as part of a concerted attempt to strengthen Page xxii relations with important economic partners, including Latin American and Caribbean nations, the European Union, China, Vietnam and Japan.
