Reception Theory Reception theory has been developed by theorists such as Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser, both of whom are professors at the University of Constance in Germany. An interesting parallel can be drawn between uses and gratifications theory and reception theory. Some mass media theorists have developed the notion of uses and gratifications, which focuses not on the effects of mass media on people, but on the way people use the media and the gratifications they get from the media.

According to this idea, the institutions of societies, the cultures found in societies, the roles assigned to women in the elite arts, in the mass media, in every aspect of life, are shaped (to a certain degree unconsciously) by male power, male sexuality in general, and, in particular, by the male phallus. Males, according to this theory, take the power relationships that exist in society as natural; they are, therefore, blind to its existence and react to suggestions that our society is phallocentric with ridicule.

Here they anticipated the theories of Bertolt Brecht, who believed that art must "alienate" people, what is called "the estrangement effect" (Verfremdung), and call attention to itself and the institutions of society that are historical and not natural, and therefore able to be changed. " Fredric Jameson (1972) explains the significance of the formalist approach: The originality of the Formalist's idea of technique is to b e f o u n d in its inversion. For Aristotle and the neo-Aristotelians, e v e r y t h i n g in the w o r k of art exists for s o m e ultimate p u r p o s e , w h i c h is the characteristic e m o t i o n or peculiar pleasure of the w o r k itself as an object c o n s u m e d .
